Single sex schools can considerably do more harm than good. Many parents send their children to single-sex school due to believing that these schools will provide a better education for their children, when in fact co-ed schools are more beneficial to students. Separating students by gender will eventually create a huge gap in their social skills. In life social skills are required and without the right fundamentals as a child social life may be delayed.
Does not provide superior education
In the past many believed that the brains of boys and girls were constructed differently. The idea was that educating a child required two different teaching methods based on gender. As a result, in order for these two methods of teaching to be carried out and increase intelligence these students had to be separated. According to a study conducted in 2010 based on how preschoolers interact in single-sex and co-ed classrooms proves these theories wrong.
Gender Stereotyping
Separating a classroom by gender is sexist. The theory that boys and girls require different types of teaching methods to learn is creating a stereotype. In the world today there are enough stereotypes on how boys and girls should live their lives. A same sex educational atmosphere unintentionally leads to the emphasis of stereotypes. We live in a society that is sexist and judgmental, a classroom should not require students to learn and act a certain way based on gender. The legal director of The American Civil Liberties says that single-sex schools lead to sexism and "This isn't the right step to address higher dropout rates by boys," Bonney said. "They promote false stereotypes about sex-based differences that don't exist. Promoting sex stereotypes can harm both girls and boys" (Zhao).
Negatively hinder the social lives of children
In the real world students that attended same sex schools will be devastatingly affected when having to interact with the opposite sex. Interacting with opposite sex is a huge necessity for life, if a student is not getting the right kind of social interaction their life may be very difficult in the future. Co-ed schools provide students with the necessities on how to engage with other genders and boost social skills. Co-ed schools endorse the needs that are essential to interact with each other, which can prevent sexism and discrimination in the real world. It educates students and helps them to realize that they are equal, have the same rights and opportunities to reach their potential goals in life.
Title IX Law
Single-sex schools are violating the law that the government has created to steer away from the problems of sexism and discrimination in schools. This law is “Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance” (U.S. Department of Education). Not only are single-sex schools in violation of this law but also they are subjecting students to the harsh realities of gender discrimination at a touchy age when they are trying to define who they are as people themselves.
